Exmoor Medical Centre Charity Walk

NHS Symphony Steppers Stride Out!

On Saturday 10 July, team members from Exmoor Medical Centre in Somerset and Lyn Health in Devon are jointly stepping out on a social walk.

Exmoor Medical Centre, already a practice within Symphony Healthcare Services (SHS) will be joined by Lyn Health Centre who hope to join SHS this summer. SHS have a strong team ethos and encourage communication between practices socially as well as in the workplace. Both practices hope that this will be the first of many events to come.

The Compassionate Friends, a leading UK bereavement support charity for anyone who has lost a child, grandchild or sibling has been chosen as the recipient for fund-raising donations, gratefully received via the Just Giving link at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/exmoor-medical-centre

The cross country route takes in some of the beautiful surroundings of Exmoor, which by its nature contains a number of hills and dales, and represents quite a challenging environment.

The walk will start in the morning, leaving from Exmoor Medical Centre in Dulverton and walking to Tarr Farm (7.3 miles), where there will be a refreshment/comfort break. The route will then follow the Exe Valley and the Two Moors Way for another 3.8 miles to the final destination of Withypool.

The walkers include team members from all areas of the practices: clinical, reception, admin, secretarial, dispensary and nursing.

The idea for the walk was put forward by Exmoor GP Dr Daniel Bunce and Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Mr Stephen Moakes.

Dan is an experienced member of Exmoor Search and Rescue and Stephen a keen moorland walker and runner; therefore they are ideally placed to plan the route with the necessary health and safety/ Covid precautions.

Dan says, “This walk is a fantastic way for the teams at both Exmoor Medical Centre and Lynton to get to know each other.

Raising money for such a deserving charity is that extra motivator for us all to see it through.

It has been great to see our team getting out on practice walks, enjoying the fresh air and experiencing the beauty of Exmoor. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the good weather will hold for the day!”

Steve adds, “Times have been hard for everyone during the Covid pandemic with both mental and physical wellbeing being important for everyone.  This is a fabulous opportunity for us as a Practice team to not only spend time together in a safe way, but to promote our own health and wellbeing, too”.

Clare Hartgen, Practice Manager at Lyn Health says, “We are really looking forward to meeting staff from our nearest SHS neighbour, Exmoor Medical Centre, and raising well needed funds for a fantastic cause”.

Lead GP at Exmoor, Dr Kelsey Boddington and Lead GP at Lynton, Dr Glen Allaway both applaud the idea of the walk and hope to participate on the day.

Some of us are generally more sedentary than sporty! –  but staff have been training hard in informal sessions; everyone is determined to complete the number of miles they feel comfortable with.

Please show your support for this worthy venture and if you are locally based and happen to see the team on our walk, do cheer us on!
